Protecting Your Home While on Vacation: Make Your Home Look Occupied

VacationBefore you leave for vacation, think about whether your home is as ready as you are. Most home burglaries occur during prime vacation months of July and August. An obviously unoccupied home is an easy target for thieves. Consider simple precautions to help protect your home from burglary while you’re away.

Make your home look occupied even when it isn’t

• Have someone trim and water your lawn or shovel your driveway while you’re gone.

• Install timers on lights, radios and televisions to make them go on and off during the day and night. Homes are more likely to appear occupied if there is a light on in each level.

• Stop mail, newspaper and all other deliveries to your home.

• Ask a trusted friend, relative or neighbor to help make the house look occupied by opening the curtains periodically or parking a car in the driveway. If you get back from your trip and something looks suspicious, don’t go inside. Call the police and wait until you’re told it’s safe to enter.

Reduce your risk of being victimized by burglars. Doing so will allow you to enjoy that vacation with a little more peace of mind.

Another useful addition can be a burglar deterrent CD. It can non stop play home occupancy sounds while the home owner is away…
