Protecting Your Home While on Vacation: Prepare Before You Leave

VacationBefore you leave for vacation, think about whether your home is as ready as you are. Most home burglaries occur during prime vacation months of July and August. An obviously unoccupied home is an easy target for thieves. Consider simple precautions to help protect your home from burglary while you’re away.

Prepare before you leave

• Though it may seem harmless, don’t discuss your vacation plans in public. You never know who may be listening.

• Don’t leave your name or whereabouts on your answering machine’s outgoing message. Never say you aren’t home.

• Don’t leave notes on your door stating that you’re away.

• Make sure locks on all doors and windows are functioning properly and are engaged.

• Make sure all outdoor lights and/or motion sensors are functioning and that hedges and trees are trimmed back.

• Ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your home and report any suspicious activities to the police. Give him or her your vacation itinerary so you can be contacted in an emergency.

• Disconnect electric garage door openers and lock the door between the garage and the inside.

• Don’t hide a spare key anywhere outside.

• Call the police department and request a vacation watch.

• Consider installing an alarm system to deter and/or detect burglars.
