Facility Safety: Fire Safety

CleanKeeping buildings, machinery and facilities safe is essential to the success of food processing facilities.

These common scenarios show typical safety hazards found in food processing facilities:

• A painted concrete floor becomes slippery around the mixing and cooking room were ingredients are stored, weighed, mixed and cooled

• A customer walks from the parking lot and trips and falls on loose asphalt

• Racking is installed without being secured to the wall and floor. Damage to a corner post by a forklift causes the racking to tip and collapse.

Fire Safety

• Notify fire department immediately upon discovery of a fire

• Verify the proper operation of the building’s sprinkler system

• Keep fire extinguishers readily accessible at all times

• Inspect fire extinguishers monthly. Periodically pressure-test them.

• Perform tag-documented inspections of all extinguishers annually

• Promptly replace worn or damaged extinguisher components

• Isolate large quantities of flammable and combustible liquids from production areas. Options include approved storage cabinets, specially designed and protected interior flammables storage rooms or secure outside storage buildings.

• Make sure proper ground and bonding lines are present and affixed while dispensing flammable liquids
